Commissioners talk property valuations, market adjustments

The regular Tuesday morning (Aug. 21) county board meeting was a fruitful example of political expediency. The board, most prominently, discussed the sale of a squad car to Brownton for $6,000, heard valuation trends and market adjustments and heard a presentation from the Southwest Initiative Foundation (SWIF), and heard public input about property tax formula changes.
“(We) could’ve given it to them cheaper than that,” were the last words from Commissioner Doug Krueger before the board approved the sale of a 2013 Ford Explorer to Brownton for $6,000. The squad car has 140,000 miles and will include some equipment that otherwise would’ve been scrapped: the radio console, cage, interior light bar and computer mount.
Commissioner Krueger’s statement probably came as a result of how Chief Deputy Tim Langenfeld landed on a price for the vehicle. Similar county vehicles recently sold at an auction for $5,500, but didn’t include the equipment, which led Langenfeld to add $500 to the total cost — though the equipment would’ve been scrapped anyway.
