County Board approves slate of 2016 road, bridge projects

The McLeod County Board of Commissioners approved the 2016 slate of road and bridge improvements at its Tuesday morning meeting.
Phil Schmalz, assistant highway engineer, said that approving the projects will allow the highway department to seek bids on the work.
A major project for 2016 will be the rehabilitation of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 4 (Melody and Major avenues) from CSAH 3 (110th Street) north to State Highway 7.
The total estimated cost of the project is $2.05 million, with $1.64 million expected to come from federal funding, and $410,000 from county funds.
Another major project is the rehabilitation of CSAH 11 (155th Street) between State Highway 22 to CSAH 2. That project is estimated at $1.7 million, with $1.2 million coming from county bonding and the remaining $500,000 from the regular road and bridge levy.
Gravel and surfacing work is planned for County Road 55 (155th Street) between CSAH 2 and CSAH 15 (Falcon Avenue), at a cost of $900,000. County road funds will pay for $500,000 of that project, with $400,000 coming from the county’s wheelage tax.
The county also plans to spend $400,000 on a cement stabilization project and seal coat on North Sunset Drive and Sunset Circle, west of Lake Marion, to help correct issues that were discovered during a recent chip-seal overlay project.
