County board OKs 2019 levy, unbalanced budget

At its last meeting before the new year, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the final property tax levy (the total amount of money the county receives from property taxes) for 2019 at $22,614,592 — unchanged from the preliminary levy — which amounts to 7.1 percent increase over 2018. The increase will amount to a $10 increase in property taxes on a $100,000 home in Glencoe.
Also approved was an unbalanced budget of an expected $54,062,931 in expenditures and $52,217,102 in revenue.
Cindy Ford stated to the commissioners, “The impacts (on the) 2019 budget, as you know, are salaries for the employees — personnel costs — we have added six new positions, and the increase in health insurance for 2019 as well as social services rising costs in their programs.”

The board also, on recommendation from its budget committee, doled out 3 percent raises for McLeod County elected officials — part of the personnel costs Ford highlighted for impacts on the 2019 budget.
