County board talks preliminary levy in workshop

McLeod County commissioners and staff met in a workshop after a Sept. 3 board meeting and discussed the potential preliminary budget figures for 2020.
Auditor-treasurer’s office accountant Colleen Robeck supplied bundles of information regarding the budget for commissioners and staff. The proposed preliminary budget for 2020, which is subject to change, is 15.91 percent.
However, another proposed preliminary budget that includes a local-option sales tax of .5 percent leaves the levy increase at 9.15 percent. Commissioners still have to decide whether to implement a local-option sales tax.
Only 16 counties out of the 87 in Minnesota currently don’t have a local-option tax structure in place according to the Association of Minnesota Counties. McLeod County commissioners voted to repeal the county’s wheelage tax with hopes of replacing it with a local-option sales tax in 2020.
