County planning commission OKs gravel pit renewal
The McLeod County Planning Advisory Commission is recommending approval of the renewal of a gravel mining conditional use permit following a public hearing Wednesday morning, Aug. 27.
Nobody showed up for the hearing.
Kenneth Polifka is asking the county to renew the permit for a mine he operates on property owned by Gene Streachek in Rich Valley Township.
Polifka said he takes just a small amount of material out of the pit each year.
“We’ve maybe taken out about 700 yards a year the past couple of years,” said Polifka.
The only question raised was whether the permit should include stipulations for hours of operation.
Bill Hard, chair of the commission, said it has been suggested that the county have uniform operating hours for all pits in the county.
Larry Gasow, zoning administrator, said that local conditions have typically been factors in setting hours of operation.
