Dorran V. Rickert, 65, of Austin, died at his home April 7, 2018.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, with the Rev. Mark Niethammer officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Brownton.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary in Austin, and at the church Friday for one hour before the service.
Dorran Vernon Rickert was born July 14, 1952, in Glencoe, the son of Vernon and Lucille (Lucas) Rickert. He was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton, and graduated from Brownton High School in 1970. He attended Willmar Community College and Marshall State University, where he received his elementary teaching degree. He student taught for one year in Woodlake, then was employed at Southgate Elementary School in Austin. He continued his education, receiving his master’s degree from St. Cloud State University. He retired from teaching at Southgate Elementary in spring 2017.
He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the teachers association, senior card club and an avid volunteer, working whenever he was asked.
He loved his church, family, friends, spending time on the farm where he grew up, and playing cards, but his passion was teaching and tutoring kids whenever he could. He enjoyed watching Austin High School sports and found it was a way to stay connected with many of the kids he taught. He liked to keep in touch with his family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Lucille Lucas Rickert of Brownton; brother, Kerry Rickert of Brownton; sister and brother-in-law, Ranaye and Randy Baumgarten of Becker; nephews, Nate Baumgarten of Becker, Cody Baumgarten of Brainerd and Caleb Baumgarten of Plymouth; niece, Cassie Baumgarten of College Station, Texas; and aunts and uncle, Jan and Chuck Draeger of Hutchinson and Rose Ehrenberg of Buffalo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Rickert; grand parents; and many aunts and uncles.
Memorials are preferred to the Austin Area Education Foundation.
