Fifty years later, a community pioneer for equality is honored
She recalls the days of not being able to compete because sports were primarily intended for boys.
Jan Willand celebrates the anniversary of Title IX as a day worthy of honor. Recently, Title IX, the federal law that requires girls’ activities and educational programs to be treated equally to boys, reached its 50th anniversary.
The 37-word act was formally approved June 8, 1972, and was signed into law by President Richard Nixon. To celebrate, community member Jan Willand was honored. Willand was an early advocate for girls’ sports in Glencoe.
