Former state senator Dille pens book on Dassel’s first World War I casualty
Former Minnesota Senator Steve Dille and his wife Pam gave a presentation on his book, “First Dassel Battlefield Casualty in World War I: The Life and Service of Paul Ferdinand Dille 1893-1918,” at the McLeod County Historical Society and Museum on Monday, Nov. 27.
Dille served as a Minnesota state representative from 1986 to 1992, and was then elected to the Minnesota Senate, where he represented District 18 until 2010.
It was always a goal for him to write a book and, in May 2017, he finally released “First Dassel Battlefield Casualty in World War I,” which focuses on his great-uncle’s story of enlistment and giving his life for his country.
Steve Dille also gives author credit to his uncle Dr. Roland Dille (who passed away just three years ago) and his son Lt. Col. Nicholas Dille (who left for the Middle East on Sunday, Nov. 26), both of whom helped write and gather facts about Paul Dille’s life, World War I and the battle Paul Dille died in.
“He was an ordinary Swedish farm boy,” said Steve Dille, at the beginning of the presentation. “He was very patriotic and felt it was his duty to volunteer to fight in this war.”
