Gepson returns to state concert stage
She’s been playing the trumpet since she was in fifth grade. Four years later, the Glencoe-Silver Lake freshman has earned another trip to perform with the state’s top high school musicians.
Emma Gepson, a member of GSL’s concert band, will participate April 6-7, in the 2019 Minnesota Band Director’s Association (MBDA) State Level Honor Band at Shakopee High School. Gepson earned a spot in the honor band as a seventh- and eighth-grader. Gepson’s award marks the seventh consecutive year Glencoe-Silver Lake will have a musician among the state’s top performers in the honor band.
The daughter of Nicole and Peter Gepson, Emma and the other members of the honor band were selected through a competitive recorded audition of pre-selected music that included the scale played in a slow and upbeat tempo and song submitted in December. She was one of 310 musicians from 77 schools who auditioned for the ensemble. She finished the audition feeling confident her performance went well.
“Some people have different ways to play certain songs. Some play very technically and others play by feel,” Gepson said. “I worked at it a lot.”
