Girls’ hoop splits pair at home

For the second week in a row, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team followed up a sizeable win with an even more lopsided loss.
Last week, GSL doubled-up Delano before being trounced by Hutchinson.
This time around, the host Panthers rolled over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 57-37 on Thursday, Dec. 20, before being rolled over by Norwood Young America 75-51 one night later.
GSL had little trouble against GFW, nearly doubling up the visitors by halftime with a 57-37 edge before going on to win by 20 points.
Guard Miah Monahan led the way with 19 points, while backcourt mates Alison Kettner and Olivia Lemke logged 15 and 11 points, respectively.
It was a far different story less than 24 hours later.
The Raiders stormed into Glencoe and led from the start. Imposing their will on the hosts, NYA built a 30-8 lead before heading into the locker room with a comfortable 37-15 advantage.
GSL improved in the second half, nearly matching the Raiders point-for-point, but spent the majority of the frame trailing by at least 20 points before the final horn blew to herald NYA’s victory.
Raiders guard Abby Mackenthun, who has been kryptonite to the Panthers playoff hopes the last couple season, scored the 1,000th point of her high school career as part of her 22-point evening.
Lemke led GSL with 13 points, followed by Monahan’s 11-point effort.
The Panthers take a 4-3 record into the holiday break, returning to the court after Christmas for their annual holiday tournament.
GSL is scheduled to take on Belle Plaine in the tourney opener at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening. A second game will follow on Friday.
