Girls' hoop takes three-game win streak into final week of regular season

A three-game winning streak last week ensured the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls' basketball team of finishing the 2018-19 season with no worse than a .500 record as the Panthers' pre-playoff schedule is set to conclude this Friday night.
After falling to 10-10 on the season, GSL rattled off home wins over Mound Westonka, Rockford and Dassel-Cokato to go three games over the break-even point with two regular-season games left to play.
The Panthers concluded a season sweep of Mound Westonka as guard Miah Monahan led all scorers with 21 points in a 62-39 defeat of the visiting White Hawks on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
After falling by just three points at home on Jan. 15, Mound Westonka kept matters close through the first half in last week's rematch, trailing 25-20 at the break.
GSL kicked it into hyperdrive in the second half, however, outscoring the visitors 37-19 over the final 18 minutes to turn the game into a 23-point rout.
Guards Alison Kettner and Olivia Lemke recorded 12 and 10 points, respectively. It was the only contest of the winning streak in which Kettner did not top the scoresheet.
The senior was on fire, leading all scorers with 21 points, as the Panthers avenged an earlier season loss at Rockford by blowing out the visiting Rockets 62-39 on Friday, Feb. 15.
Once again, GSL turned a close halftime contest into a blowout by doubling-up the visitors 32-16 in the second half to win by the exact same score that it had three nights earlier.
Monahan and Lemke tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively, in the victory.
The duo took a night off from their usual roles of pacing the Panther attack as the Panthers wrapped up a season sweep of visiting Dassel-Cokato with a 55-26 win on Monday, Feb. 18.
Once again, Kettner led all scorers with 13 points as nine GSL players scored in the lopsided affair. The Panthers didn't wait for halftime against the Chargers, seizing a 25-8 halftime edge on their way to the 29-point win.
Forward Kaitlyn Uecker had 10 points, with guard Kendall Guerrero chipping in eight points. Monahan and Lemke posted eight and six points, respectively.
GSL carried a 6-6 record in Wright County Conference West play into their regular-season home finale against New London-Spicer on Tuesday, Feb. 19, after the Chronicle went to press.
With Thursday night's non-conference game at Belle Plaine – a team the Panthers topped 67-46 on Dec. 27 – cancelled, the final week of the regular season is a daunting one for GSL.
Following Tuesday's game against the Wildcats, the No. 2 team in the WCC West and a squad that beat the Panthers 49-25 on Jan. 22, GSL wraps up the regular season at Annandale on Friday night.
The Cardinals entered the final week of the regular season leading the conference with a 10-1 circuit record – the lone loss coming against NL-S. Annandale defeated the Panthers 48-36 on Jan. 25.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, the Section 2AA Tournament comes calling.
Play in the 2AA North subsection is slated to begin Tuesday on the home court of one of the top four seeds. GSL entered the week as the No. 3 ranked team in the subsection, followed by Tri-City United, Belle Plaine and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
If the rankings hold, the Panthers will host GFW at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, with the winner advancing to the subsection semifinals at Watertown-Mayer High School on Friday, March 1.
The subsection final is scheduled for March 5, with the section championship game on March 8. Both rounds are slated to be played at Minnesota State University in Mankato.
