Girls' hoop thumps, then gets thumped
The Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team found itself on opposite sides of lopsided results last week.
After doubling up Delano at home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, for their third consecutive victory, the Panthers winning streak was abruptly halted as they were more than doubled-up in a blowout loss at Hutchinson three nights later.
GSL guard Miah Monahan scored more points than the entire Delano team as the Panthers tamed the Tigers 48-24 at home. The contest was never close, as the hosts ran out to a 32-12 halftime lead before cruising to the 24-point win.
The focal point for most of what occurred on the court, Monahan led all scorers by a wide margin with 27 points. Backcourt mates Kendall Guerrero and Alison Kettner chipped in seven and six points, respectively.
It was a drastically different result on Friday, Dec. 14, at Hutch. The hosts ran up a 30-16 halftime edge before squelching the visitors 27-10 in the second half en route to a 57-26 win. The 26 points scored was the Panthers’ lowest output of the young season by a full 20 points.
Monahan again led GSL in scoring, but recorded just nine points under heavy defensive pressure. Kettner scored five points, with forward Kaitlyn Uecker recording four points. Seven Panthers scored in the contest. Nine Tigers scored in all, led by Michaela Stamer’s 12 points.
GSL, 3-2 on the season, hosts a pair of opponents as the team heads into the holiday break. Thursday night, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop visits Glencoe for a 7 p.m. tip-off; Norwood Young America comes to town for a 5:45 start Friday night.
