Girls' soccer earns first win of season

It didn’t come easy, but the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team earned its first victory of the season by defeating host Worthington in a penalty shootout during the Section 2A play-in game on Saturday, Oct. 6.
GSL entered the game 0-12-1 during the regular season with a 1-1 tie against Faribault on Sept. 22. The 18th-seeded Panthers battled their 15th-seeded hosts to a 1-1 tie through regulation, forcing overtime and the eventual penalty kick round to decide matters.
Freshman midfielder Caroline Schmidt scored for visiting GSL, with the assist going to sophomore midfielder Mariana Castillo. Senior goalkeeper Destiney Exsted saved 21 of the 22 shots she faced to force added time and the shootout.
Exsted, one of the Panthers’ three captains, also scored the decisive goal during the best-of-five shootout round. The goal helped send her team into the first round of the sectional bracket with a 4-3 shootout win.
GSL traveled to face Jordan on Tuesday, Oct. 9, after the Chronicle went to press. A win over their 10th-seeded hosts propels the Panthers into a Thursday night matchup at seventh-seeded Holy Family Catholic in Victoria.
