Girls' soccer rallies to top Mayer Lutheran

After suffering a pair of tough losses to begin the season, the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ soccer team put together an impressive performance to win 3-2 at Mayer Lutheran on Monday, Aug. 28, and claim victory No. 1 on the young season.
The Panthers trailed 2-0 early on the thick, damp turf at Mayer, but gained in confidence through the first half after putting several good chances on the Crusaders’ net.
GSL finally broke through as midfielder Morgan Verdeck got her team on the board with a goal off a rebound in the 31st minute that made the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts. Midfielder Emily Thalmann earned an assist on the scoring play.
With the Panthers strafing the Mayer goal, it didn’t take long to find the equalizer as forward Miranda Litzau headed home a perfectly placed cross by midfielder Hope Kosek with two minutes remaining in the half to level the count at 2-2.
The visitors saw a couple of golden opportunities to build a sizable lead late in the opening stanza meet with woodwork, including a scorching blast from midfielder Thalmann that hit the post and a quick chip from Litzau that hit the crossbar.
