Good Shepherd welcomes new pastor

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe welcomed and installed the Rev. Jon Niebuhr at an installation service on Sunday, Oct. 1.
Niebuhr grew up in Norwood with his parents and seven brothers and attended Mayer Lutheran High School. After he graduated college from St. Cloud State in 1981, he and his wife, Jennifer, spent one year at Concordia Seminary before Niebuhr discerned that the time wasn’t right for him to become a pastor.
“I still had a lot to learn,” said Niebuhr.
He then worked in the prison system for 17 years and then as a full-time firefighter in Faribault for seven years until he sustained an injury in a fire call that prevented him from continuing his service. “I was told that I had to retire and work behind a desk for my last five years and I said ‘not a chance.’ And so I asked my wife to leave her favorite school and her best friends and go on a journey of faith with me and we went back to the seminary.”
Niebuhr graduated from Concordia in 2012 after two years of schooling. His first church was Trinity Lutheran in Carver, where he completed his internship and continued to serve the congregation for five years.
“And I have now been at this church for two weeks,” said Niebuhr.
Niebuhr said he was inspired to continue his schooling as a minister through his volunteer ministry at Trinity Lutheran in Faribault. “I was involved in the confirmation program and it just became more and more apparent to me that that’s what the Lord wanted me to do, to go back and finish what I had started,” said Niebuhr.
