Grapplers lose at Canby
The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team fell in its regular-season finale, losing 42-32 at Canby in a dual meet on Friday, Feb. 5.
Canby took a prompt 18-0 lead via a trio of forfeits to begin the competition. Kole Polzin, at 126 pounds, logged the Panthers’ first points by pinning Nolan Fink in one minute, 11 seconds.
A Canby win by fall and another forfeit gave the hosts a 30-6 edge before back-to-back major decisions by Alex Mielke and Aaron Donnay. Mielke scored a 14-5 win over Konnor King at 145, Donnay topped Billy Deslauriers 12-2 at 152.
GSL/LP pulled to within 30-20 after Dylan Melchert pinned Preston Snobl at 2:21 of their match at 160 before Canby claimed another win by fall at 170.
The Panthers put themselves in position to earn a come-from-behind victory with three-straight wins from Dalton Kosek, Nick Brelje and Tristan Weber.
Kosek was a 5-2 winner over Noah Schott at 182, Brelje won by forfeit at 195 and Weber defeated Evan Stoks 9-2 at 220.
However, Canby tallied a decisive win by fall at 285 to finalize the 10-point victory.
GSL/LP begins competition in the Section 2AA Tournament this week.
The ninth-seeded Panthers open against No. 8 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 6 p.m. Thursday at Waconia.
An opening-round win advances the Panthers to an immediate quarterfinal matchup against top-seeded Waconia.
Sectional semifinal and final matchups are on Saturday at Hutchinson.
