GSL Knowledge Bowl captures top 2 spots at subregion meet

Like many winter activities, Knowledge Bowl has finished its regular season and is beginning the post-season leading up to the state meet. Also like many Minnesota winter activities, Knowledge Bowl can be affected by the weather. Last week, both of these statements were true.
Glencoe-Silver Lake’s first post-season competition, the subregion meet, was scheduled for Tuesday, March 6. However, on that day, GSL (along with much of our region) had a late start, so the subregion meet was put off until Wednesday, March 7. What made this more unusual was that the meet for the other subregion in GSL’s region had also been postponed to Wednesday, March 7. Because of this, the teams of the two subregions actually competed against each other at Willmar’s Ridgewater College on Wednesday.
There were 28 teams at the combined meet, including three from GSL. GSL’s Purple team started out with an outstanding written round score of 53 out of 60 possible points. This was 17 points ahead of the second-place team. GSL competed in Room One for the whole meet, defeating teams from Ortonville, MACCRAY, YME, and Hutchinson during the four rounds with scores of 28-5-4, 19-8-3, 24-4-4, and 20-7-7. Purple finished the meet with a remarkable 150.0 points, 75.5 points ahead of the second-place team. This is an extraordinary margin for a winning score and was an excellent first step on the way to GSL’s goal of competing at state. The team members are Brett Baumgarten, Jack Gepson, Austin Pinske and Jacob Reichow.
