GSL School Board looks at ‘digital’ snow days
Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Superintendent Chris Sonju’s report at the School Board meeting Feb. 9 prompted an extensive discussion regarding the idea of “digital day.”
Digital day is a concept that other Minnesota schools are using to conduct class online when there is a snow day. GSL has taken surveys with the staff and researched how other schools have accomplished this. When the plan is ready, it will be brought to the school board on March 9 for approval.
Board Member Jamie Alsleben pointed out that there is a lot of potential for leaving people behind that may not have online access to the curriculum. Sonju said a survey revealed that 92 percent of students have online access at home, but this number could be reflecting devices such as smart phones.
“There are a lot of reasons not to do it, but this is something that is coming and to be able to be out in the forefront and be able to try a pilot and to learn from it. I think is an excellent opportunity,” Sonju said.
