GSL baseball extends season in dramatic fashion

Thursday, May 25
#7 GSL 12, #10 Providence Academy 11 Panthers come from behind to win first round playoff game
The Panther baseball team would score five runs in the bottom of the seventh to come back and defeat Providence Academy. With the Panthers trailing 7-11 and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, senior Logan Christensen would draw a walk off Providence pitcher Tomas Palomarez. Max Hansch would then single to third, putting two runners on for the Panthers. Braxton Streich would hit a pop fly to third base that would be caught for the second out. The Panthers now down to their final out would get a single by Maverick Buckley that would score Christensen making the score 8-11. Freshman Brody Ruschmeier would come to the plate representing the tying run. Ruschmeier would get hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for the Panthers dangerous leadoff hitter Landon Stifter. Lion’s pitcher Tomas Palomarez would hit Stifter, his second batter in a row, which would score Max Hansch, cutting the deficit to 9-11.
Providence Academy would opt to change pitchers, electing Caleb Cisewski to face GSL’s red-hot Damion Schwartz (4 for 5 in the game). Schwartz would quickly fall behind 0-2 in the count, fouling several balls down the first baseline. “I was just looking for something down the middle I could hit and fighting off the breaking balls,” Schwartz said of the at-bat after the game. Schwartz would get the pitch he wanted and chopped it into the ground toward the short stop and would beat out the throw in an extremely close play at first base that would score Buckley and Ruschmeier, tying the game up at 11-11.
Luke Roepke would step to the plate with the winning run at third base. Roepke was hitless in the game to that point which was rare for the sophomore, but his first hit of this game couldn’t have come at a better time as he ripped the game winning base hit to the warning track in center field scoring Stifter and securing a place in the second round for the Panthers. “I feel like I’m on top of the world,” Reopke said after the game reflecting on maybe the biggest hit of his career “I’m still in shock.”
