GSL boys’ golfers finish fourth at sections

The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ golf team finished a season of promise with a flourish, placing fourth in the Section 2AA Tournament that concluded on Monday, June 3.
“The boys played really hard,” coach Chad Koenen said. “I am really proud of them.”
The Panthers came within a whicker of sending one, if not two, of their members to the state Class AA meet.
Zach Meyer finished the two-day, 36-hole sectional tourney with identical scores of 79, giving him a plus-14 total of 158, which was just two strokes off of the state-qualifying cut with a ninth-place individual finish.
Teammate Riley Schuth carded an 80 and an 81 to take 10th with a plus-15 total of 161, five strokes away from a trip to state.
Teammates Damien Silus and Jacob Schrupp each finished with two-day totals of 176 to contribute to GSL’s fourth-place tally of 671 total strokes.
Derek Trippel and Reid Coon-Gore also competed, both carding a 36-hole score of 186.
While this season has ended for GSL, there is plenty of hope for the future of Panther golf as the squad features nary a senior.
Given a taste of success in progressing to the second day of sectional play for the first time in the decade-plus tenure of Koenen at the helm, the Panthers are optimistic in the future – and willing to put in the work to make state dreams a reality.
“They’re bound and determined to get better every day,” Koenen said. “They turned in their team bags back in after sections ended and went right back out on the course.
“I think you’ll see them out there a lot this summer, playing and getting better.”
