GSL girls headed back to Mankato

A year after St. Peter eliminated Glencoe-Silver Lake from the Section 2AA girls’ basketball playoffs, the Panthers returned the favor on Friday, March 3, by thumping the Saints 76-53 in the North subsection semifinals at Prior Lake High School.

“It was pretty fun,” coach Jeff Monahan said.

After building a double-digit lead late in the first half, No. 2 seed St. Peter managed to get back into the game on the strength of some hot three-point shooting, though the third-seeded Panthers led 31-24 at the break.

“We got out-rebounded in the first half, and St. Peter is always going to be shooting threes,” Monahan said. “However, I thought we owned the boards in the second half and that really allowed our transition game to get going.”

The Saints briefly cut their deficit to 31-27 on a three to open the second half, but GSL recorded the next six points to regain a double-digit edge that it did not relinquish.
