GSL parking lot plan draws favorable bids

A proposal to finally implement lasting improvements to the parking lot at Glencoe-Silver Lake Junior-Senior High School and Lakeside Elementary has seemingly cleared an important early hurdle.
Last Tuesday, Feb. 26, the district opened bids on the proposed $1.2 million project. Four of the six bids received were at or below the estimated budget with a fifth bid at the expected cost, according to Michelle Sander, the school district’s business manager.
If the school board decides to move forward with the project, funding will potentially comes from tax abatement bonds. The Minnesota Legislature created the bonds in the 1990s to allow local units of government to sell the bonds for economic development.
The school board will discuss and consider the bids for the proposed parking lot improvements at its monthly board meeting Monday, March 11, 7 p.m. If the school board decides to move forward with the project, it will call for a public hearing April 15, before the board’s 7 p.m. meeting, Sander said. If the school board opts to move forward with the bonds, its bond consultant will present information on the cost of issuing the bonds and the impact to property owners in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District.
