GSL School District will see decrease in 2017 levy
The Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) School Board approved a $3.55 million tax levy payable in 2017 at its regular board meeting Monday, Dec. 12.
The 2017 levy is a $213,866, or 5.86 percent, decrease from 2016.
At the truth-in-taxation hearing held before the regular board meeting, Business Manager Michelle Sander explained the levy and budget process and the factors that go into the determination to the two members of the public in attendance at the hearing.
She explained that unlike cities and counties, the school districts budget doesn’t follow the calendar year, rather the school year (July 1 to June 30) and the budget is not approved at the same time as the levy.
The levy approved now, in 2016, will be payable in 2017, and used for the 2017-18 school year. The budget for the school year will be approved in June 2017. Actual numbers from 2015 are used to determine the levy.
