GSL/LP wrestlers head into section meet on a roll

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team might not have enjoyed the regular season success it hoped for, but the Panthers are heading into the section tournament tomorrow night, February 13, 6 p.m., on a bit of a roll.
The Panthers will open the team section of post-season competition tomorrow night in Hutchinson against Mankato West. While a loss ends the team’s season, if GSL/LP tops the Scarlets, they’ll face the host Tigers immediately following the match. If they survive that match, the Panthers will advance to the section semifinals Saturday, Feb. 15, 4 p.m., at Mankato West. The individuals’ tournament begins after the completion of the team competition.
GSL/LP won its last three matches and nine of its last 14 matches. The Panthers wrapped up the regular season Feb. 7 in New Ulm with wins over New Ulm, Fulda/Murray County Central and Windom/Mountain Lake. The wins came after a five-match losing streak that included setbacks against Hutchinson Feb. 6, Brainerd/Pillager and Sauk Rapids/Rice Feb. 4.

Panthers 41,
Windom/ML 24
The Panthers dominated the middle portion of the match and cruised to the win over Windom/Mountain Lake Feb. 7 in New Ulm.
The Panthers’ winners included Dawson Varpness at 120 pounds, Carter Ruschmeier at 126, Jace Cacka in the 138-pound match, Zachary Voelz at 152, Keegan Lemke at 160, Carter Ziegler in the 182-pound match and Riley Butcher at 195 pounds.

Panthers 45, New Ulm 36
GSL/LP took the lead for good when Voelz won the 160-pound match to give the Panthers a 30-24 lead in the match against the host Eagles.
The Panthers rolled to the win from there, claiming victories by Lemke at 170 pounds, Ziegler at 195 pounds and Butcher in the 220-pound match.
Ruschmeier won GSL/LP’s first match at 126 pounds. Cacka won the 132-pound match. The Panthers won four matches by forfeit.
