Gymnasts ready for sectional
The Glencoe-Silver Lake gymnastics team closed out its regular season with a pair of meets last week as it made final preparations for the Section 2A competition on Friday, Feb. 13.
“A lot of girls have really stepped up for us these last few meets,” coach Kim Hahn said. “I think we will do great [at sectionals].”
The Panthers completed their pre-sectional schedule on Friday, Feb. 6 with a home dual meet against Dassel-Cokato. It was the final time GSL competed within the friendly confines of the Panther Field House and a raucous crowd cheered on the gymnasts.
However, in the end, D-C was too much for the Panthers. The short-staffed hosts, competing without the injured Gia Venier and Nichole Binder, fell 126.55-116.35. Ashley Petersen logged a 32.35 to take second in the all-around competition.
Petersen went out with a flourish in her final at-home event, winning the floor exercise by a tenth of a point with a 9.0 after spiritedly attacking her routine to the delight of the home audience. She had previously won the opening event of the competition with an 8.95 on vault. In-between the vault and floor, Petersen took two fourth-place results with a 7.05 on the uneven bars and a 7.35 on balance beam.
