Helen Baker’s future addressed; tours set

To the Editor:
I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who stopped by the Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) booth at the Glencoe Expo this past Sunday.
It was a great day of visiting and getting the information out to our public about the upcoming vote on May 12. As we keep on moving forward, we will continue to provide our public with the necessary information that you need to become an educated voter. You can also find information about the election on our school website. If you go to www.gsl.k12.mn.us and click on “election information,” you will find several links that will provide you with important details about the election.
In the weeks ahead, I will attempt to provide information on questions that have come up. One of these questions is, “What will you do with the Helen Baker School if the vote goes through?” If we have a successful election, the district will attempt to sell Helen Baker. Any money that is made on that sale (no matter what the amount), will go toward the new building project.
There is a specific process that must be followed in selling public buildings. Because of this process, we will need to wait for the election results before we can move forward in selling the building. It is our hope that the building can be used as an asset to the community and that somebody has a productive plan for the facility. With the opportunity to become more efficient both financially and educationally in having two campuses, the Helen Baker building is not in the facility plans for the district.
Another approach that we are putting into place is to have weekly tours of Helen Baker and the high school to identify the needs we are requesting voters to support. Starting on March 10 at 10 a.m. at Helen Baker, and then at 11 a.m. at the Panther Field House, someone from our school will be available to give you a tour. Simply meet at the school at the designated time and we will show you around. Tour dates will be on March 10, 17, 24, 31, April 7, 14, 21, 28, and May 5. We hope to see you and talk to you soon.
