Hutch rallies to stun Panthers in opener
It wasn’t pretty, but it at least appeared that it was going to be a win.
The Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team had its ups-and-downs in its season-opening game against Hutchinson on Friday, Nov. 27. Yet, as the final moments ticked away, it appeared that the Panthers would hold on for a victory over their neighboring rivals.
And then the end came.
With GSL leading by two points as the clock ticked under five seconds to play, Tigers guard Andrew Schmidt heaved up a desperate three-point attempt that failed.
However, the ball inexorably returned to the senior – and given a second chance with two seconds left, he hit the game-deciding basket to send the Panthers to a crushing 55-54 defeat.
“Our inexperience really showed up. More than I thought it was going to,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “We didn’t finish, we didn’t take care of business. I chalk up this loss mostly to inexperience.”
