I’m often a raffle winner, but of what?

I don’t consider myself a heavy gambler — I don’t go to casinos, invest hundreds of dollars into lotteries or head to Vegas on big sprees.
But I’m usually more than willing to toss a few bucks into local raffles, especially knowing they support local activities and projects. And I tend to be lucky.
For a while, I did so well at the Brownton Lions Club meat raffles that I thought it was going to have to invest in a chest freezer, if I could win enough from pulltabs to buy one. But my luck at the meat game has shriveled up in the past couple of seasons, and I can’t keep the freezer atop my fridge full, much less a chest freezer.
And I win at other events, too, but it seems I win a lot of stuff I don’t know what to do with.
I’ve won a couple of ball caps at the Brownton Rod & Gun Club’s ice fishing contest. I’m not a cap wearer and passed them off to friends. Fortunately, the caps were paired up with useful gift certificates for gas and the Dairy Queen, and I took full advantage of those.
This year at the ice fishing contest, I won a John Deere combine — a toy one. Since I don’t much care to even push a vacuum cleaner across my carpet, I couldn’t see myself pushing a toy combine across it. I struck a deal with a friend, who bought it from me for his son. I at least recouped the money I had invested into raffle tickets.
I’ve also won a couple of things at the Rod & Gun’s boat party. One year, it was a car detailing kit, which came in handy for polishing up the rust on my 1995 Geo Prism.
Another year, I won a print of hunting dogs. Although I love dogs, the print seemed more appropriate for a “man cave” than my living room, and the print went to a guy who had bought a half-share in my boat party ticket.
Sunday, I came up from the laundry room to a voice mail that announced I had won a prize in the High Island Improvement raffle.
Shortly after, my prize was delivered, and included a set of shiny new wrenches, allen key wrenches and a drill-bit set. I felt an immediate desire to invent something, build  something or fix something. But that feeling soon faded when I had to use items from my “do-it-herself” tool kit to get my tools out of their hermetically sealed plastic packaging.
The wrenches are a shiny silver and come in a handy case with a handle. I might hang them on my kitchen wall as a decoration. Hmmm … I could use my new drill bits to  drill a hole in the wall, and then … ah, never mind. I think I’ll go wax the car.
