It’s OK to criticize, but do it with kindness

Scanning through social media after the Glencoe Days celebration was somewhat deflating, to say the least.
People took to the Internet to offer up their criticisms of the celebration. Every public event is subject to criticism, but what struck us most was the venom of some of the barbed comments. The other thing that struck us was that some people simply have no idea how a community festival or celebration is organized.
Many seem to think events are city-sponsored; in effect, that their tax dollars are buying them entertainment. While there is usually some city involvement in community events, for the most part, they are organized by a dedicated group of volunteers. Those volunteers are just like the rest of us: they have busy lives with work and family. They are not like many of us in that they also dedicate their time — without compensation — to help raise funds, organize and coordinate community festivals.
And the sad fact is, many of these groups are dwindling in membership, partly because people simply are too busy to participate, but, perhaps, because their efforts go virtually unrewarded.
As we previously stated, no event is exempt from criticism. Most community event organizers welcome ideas and suggestions. But what they probably welcome most is more help.
What’s the old saying? If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Go ahead and offer up your ideas and criticisms, but please do it kindly and compassionately. More importantly, offer yourself, your time and your labor.
We want to stress that not all the comments made about the celebration were critical. Many people also offered up compliments and thanks.
As for us, we were impressed with the variety of activities the Glencoe Days committee packed into a two-day celebration. Kudos to the volunteers who helped organize the celebration. Do know that there are those who appreciate your efforts.
