Kounkel joins Chronicle as city, school reporter

Jakob Kounkel

Jakob Kounkel has joined The McLeod County Chronicle as a staff writer.
Kounkel’s main beats will be the Glencoe City Council, Glencoe-Silver Lake School District and feature stories.
“My goal as a writer is to report on government and politics at the highest level, and to reach as many people as I can with my writing and ideas,” said Kounkel.
Kounkel comes to The Chronicle from Monticello, where he was born and raised.
Kounkel said that while growing up, Monticello was similar in population to Glencoe, but now has grown to over 13,000 residents.
“This is why I’ve found commuting to Glencoe to be therapeutic,” he said. “I’m leaving behind a community that is growing so fast, it’s forgotten about what makes a city feel like home.
“When I come to Glencoe, I arrive to the heart-warming ambiance small-town Minnesota provides: a family-like community, where a familiar face is right around the corner; a collective effort for the betterment of the community, not the individual; thriving local business, where the special of the day depends on who walks through the door. When I come to Glencoe, I feel a sense of what I lost in my hometown, and I’ve refreshed on the kind of culture I want to be a part of wherever I end up,” he added.
Kounkel, 23, earned a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, St. Paul, where he majored in English with an emphasis in journalism. This is his first job in the field.
