Lady Panthers' season ends in subsection semis
An exciting and successful campaign that was the Glencoe-Silver Lake volleyball team’s 2015 season came to a close Monday night in a loss to Belle Plaine in the Section 2AA North subsection semifinals.
The Panthers put forth a valiant effort against the Tigers – not only the top-seeded team in the subsection, but also the No. 1-ranked team in Class AA – but could not keep up in the face of their opponent’s ferocious power.
It is the second-straight season in which GSL had its season ended by Belle Plaine, which has been the section’s state representative for the past three seasons. Last year’s match lasted four games, though this year the Tigers won in three games (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) despite a spirited effort from the Panthers.
“It’s very hard to see this season come to an abrupt end,” coach Lori Schwirtz said. “It is an extremely competitive section.”
In a match that lasted just under an hour at New Prague High School, middle hitter Maddie Monahan led GSL with five kills, with Taylor Novak posting four kills and fellow outside hitter Erika Ribar tallying three kills with 15 digs.
