Letter to editor - Glencoe blood drive exceeded Red Cross goal

To the editor,
We had a wonderful outcome by exceeding the goal the American Red Cross set for us.
After the cancellation of our first Glencoe Community Blood Drive in April (due to a nasty snowstorm), the second scheduled Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2019 was held Wednesday, July 24, at the Glencoe City Center ballroom.
The American Red Cross set our goal at 103 units. We were very surprised and happy at the end of the day to hear that we exceeded the goal and collected 105 units. Because the ARC has such a critical shortage of blood available, they were very pleased with the results. One-hundred-five units have the potential to help up to 315 patients.
Of the 98 donors who appeared for the drive, 16 were deferred (ineligible to donate at this drive for medical or other reasons). Of the 82 remaining donors, 59 gave complete single whole blood units and 23 gave power red units (double = 46 units), totaling the 105 units. There were no incomplete donations this time.
The 98 number included 18 walk-ins, which exceeded the 16 no-shows for the day (about 17 percent of our original appointments). We also welcomed three first-time donors.
More donors continue to take advantage of the opportunity to use the rapidpass option to complete online their pre-donation reading and health history, which greatly shortened the wait time for the donors. Information about RapidPass can be found by logging on to redcrossblood.org/rapidpass
Each drive is a team effort, comprised of volunteers, ARC staff, and most importantly, the donors. We wouldn’t be able to provide these services to the ARC without the dedicated assistance of our Scheduling Coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier and all the additional volunteers who provide their time and talents before and during this blood drive. The efforts of the volunteers help us fulfill our lifesaving mission to the American Red Cross. Each drive is truly a community team effort.
The last Glencoe Community Blood Drive of 2019 is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 1 to 7 p.m., at Glencoe City Center. We have many donors who have already pre-scheduled their November appointments. There are open timeslots so if you want to pre-set your November appointment, please call our Scheduling Coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475.
The donors take one of the blessings they have been given – the gift of life – and faithfully pay it forward. The American Red Cross, the recipient patients and their families thank you, the donors. You have made a difference in the lives of 315 people. Blessings on the remainder of your summer.
