Letter to editor: Operating levy ‘critical’ to continue programs for students

To the editor,
As many of you know, the GSL School District will be holding an operating levy election Nov. 5.
This operating levy is critical for us to continue to have the great programs we have for our kids. It is important to note that the current levy is ending on June 30, 2020. The revenue that is generated is used to operate the district. This includes, but is not limited to supplies, salaries, curriculum, energy, transportation, activities, etc. etc. Currently we have $176.88 per pupil unit of voter-approved dollars.
The district is asking to increase this amount to $460, which will be an increase of $283.12. This vote is for 10 years and will have the inflationary factor built in. This means that the levy amount per pupil, if the vote is successful, will have a slight increase each year to account for inflation.
This is a property tax increase, but it is not on agriculture land. For example, a home valued at $150,000 will see an increase to what is currently approved, by $57 per year, or $4.75 per month. Please visit our school’s website at www.gsl.k12.mn.us for more information. The required mailing will also have information for you. Voting will take place at the Glencoe City Center on Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Absentee ballots are available at the school district office, at 1621 16th St. E. as well. Thank you all for your support and consideration. Please contact me by email at
