Live ballot or mail-in - Our view: Either way, vote as you wish

There is little in America as fundamentally important as the right to vote, that is something DFLers and Republicans can agree on.
If they won’t agree on that, we might as well shut society down.
Townships, cities and counties, perhaps even states are discussing whether to hold live elections or hold them via mail-in ballots. Sadly, there are some who believe we should require local governments to hold live elections.
Elected reps in cities, townships and counties have been debating whether to hold their primary and general elections later this year via live ballot or mail-in voting. It seems there are some councilors, township supervisors and county commissioners who insist votes be cast and counted live. In some cities and townships, there is concern an election hall is not the best place to be for people who want to minimize their exposure to coronavirus.
Election judges, it seems are oftentimes folks with the time to serve as election judges. Some are older, others in their prime. Some might have underlying conditions that makes them a good candidate for COVID-19. Some townships, cities and counties recognize it’s in the best interest of their election judges to allow voters to vote via mail-in ballots.
Spending a day in a hall while a lengthy list of people parades by picking up ballots is probably not the best place for folks, regardless of their age and health history, to be this fall as the supposed second wave of coronavirus makes its way across the United States.
Just as election judges who are generally older or people with health concerns can rightfully take a pass at serving as election judges, the same general group of people would be wise to mail-in their ballots. Yes, they should vote. But they should also be safe and protect themselves or their families.
Mailing in a ballot, whether it is an absentee ballot or a mail-in ballot is just smart. President Trump mailed in his ballot in a Florida primary election earlier this year.
The non-partisan group factcheck.org says legitimate claims of widespread voter fraud, including claims from the president, remain unproven.
If people wish to cast a live ballot, they can receive a mail-in ballot and deliver it to the McLeod County’s North Complex building on Election Day, Nov. 3.
We must allow voters the opportunity to practice this most basic right as they deem is right for them and their families during a pandemic. We must also respect the right of individual cities and townships to hold elections as they deem smart, safe and proper.
