Local Legion, VFW teams have begun their seasons

The summer season has begun for both the Plato American Legion Post 641 and the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 baseball teams.
Post 641 opened its season with a 2-1 record after blanking Sibley East on Wednesday, June 13, and splitting a doubleheader against Norwood Young America the next day.
Korey Johnson toed the rubber for Plato against Sibley East and earned a complete-game 2-0 win. He struck out 13 while walking none and allowing just three hits over seven innings of work. He also drove in one run while at the plate.
Dane Schwirtz went 1-for-2 batting with one RBI and one run scored in the win.
Chandler Glaeser took the loss despite diving up just two earned runs in a 2-1 loss to NYA to open a doubleheader.
However, Plato stormed back to win 7-2 to earn the split. Brett Baumgarten went the distance, allowing one earned run in six innings of work, while also joining Ty Christensen with two RBI at the plate.
Post 5102 currently sits at 2-5 overall after going 2-3 last week.
The team split a doubleheader with Becker on Wednesday, June 13, and then going 1-2 in the Hutchinson VFW/Junior Legion Tournament June 15-17.
Glencoe topped Becker 5-4 as Bennett Lepel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The walk off victory made a winner out of starting pitcher Drew Hedtke, who gave up just three earned runs in contest. Preston Sturges went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Glencoe lost Game 2 by an 8-3 score, with Lepel logging a double and a walk.
Post 5102 lost its first two tournament games 2-0 to Litchfield and 5-4 to Starbuck before winning the third game 5-3.
Isaiah Streich struck out eight in a complete game victory. Reece Schwirtz went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Blake Mickolichek had two hits and one RBI.
