Marilyn Mercedes (Kern) Templin, 89, of Glencoe, wife of the late Ernie Templin, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2017, at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 3, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe with the Rev. Peter Adelsen officiating. Yvonne Schuette was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace,” “How Great Thou Art” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.”
Casket bearers were Jeff Templin, Angela Templin, Angela Marshall, Tony Marshall, Wayne Ahlbrecht and David Prehn. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Marilyn Templin was born May 19, 1928, at home in Bergen Township, McLeod County. She was the daughter of George and Lydia (Podratz) Kern. She was baptized as an infant on June 3, 1928, by the Rev. Schert at her home, and was confirmed in her faith on April 27, 1941, by the Rev. Streufert at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. She was educated at School District 19 in Bergen Township.
On June 10, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ernie Templin by the Rev. Streufert at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe. They were blessed with one son, Curt. The couple shared 64 years of marriage before Mr. Templin’s death on July 18, 2011.
In addition to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Templin worked at Strutwear for seven years, then at Telex for 50 years before she retired. She also worked side by side with her husband at farming.
She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and served with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Society, altar guild and helped with funerals. She was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary 5102, where she enjoyed assisting in finger printing, pillow cleaning and the poppy luncheon. She also volunteered at the Clothing Depot and CareConnection.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening, baking and canning, specifically her famous pickles. She loved to travel with her husband and when he was stationed overseas, Mrs. Templin traveled to 12 different countries. After retiring, the couple enjoyed cruises and went to Mexico five times. She enjoyed time spent with her family, who were very dear to her, and also valued being a “grandmother” to many other children.
She is survived by her son, Curt Templin and his special friend Ursula Wingate, of Glencoe; grandson, Jeff (Angela) Templin of Glencoe; granddaughter, Angela (Tony) Marshall of Panama City, Florida; great-grandchildren, Breana and Gracey Templin and Kali and Anthony Marshall; sister, Orvilla Prehn of Glencoe; former daughter-in-law, Sandy Templin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lydia Kern; husband, Ernie Templin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorrinna and Adam Schaefer and Lois and Walter Dose; and brothers-in-law, Marvin Prehn, Earl Sprengeler, Harry Templin, Maynard Templin, Lester Templin, Howard Templin and infant Jerry Templin.
