Matmen host Don Hall Invite

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team opened its season last week with a meet at Hutchinson and its annual Don Hall Invitational at GSL High School.
A lineup chock-full of fresh faces couldn’t keep pace at Hutchinson on Thursday, Nov. 30. Falling to both the host Tigers, as well as Forest Lake.
The matchup against Hutch began in promising manner. Cater Ruschmeier claimed an 11-2 major decision at 106 pounds, with Sawyer Varpness winning by fall at 113 to give the Panthers an early 10-0 lead.
Unfortunately, those were the only points GSL/LP claimed on the night in a 72-10 loss. Individual results were not available for the Forest Lake match.
Two days later, the GSL gymnasium was filled to the rafters for the multi-team invitational.
After a morning and afternoon filled with wrestling, a trio of Panthers advanced to the championship round in their respective weight classes.
Varpness advanced to the title match at 113 before losing by fall; captain Paul Lemke wrestled for first place at 285, but also lost by fall. Zachary Voelz also placed second at 126 after advancing to, but losing in, his first-place match.
Ruschmeier placed third at 106 with an 8-2 decision over Carter Brandes of New Ulm. Aaron Higgins placed fifth at 120, with Aaron Castillo and Jakob Rusten taking sixth at 195 and 132, respectively.
GSL hosted a triangular meet on Tuesday, Dec. 5, after the Chronicle went to press. The Panthers are also slated to compete in an invitational tournament at Chanhassen High School on Saturday morning.
