Matmen place fifth at Richfield tournament

The Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team improved to 3-4 in dual meets this season by means of a fifth-place finish at the Richfield Duals on Saturday, Dec. 16.
After falling 43-33 to Bloomington Kennedy in the opening round, the Panthers took down the tournament host Spartans 60-24 and the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton Lumberjacks 46-34 to secure the fifth-place standing.
Against Kennedy, GSL/LP took a 27-0 lead before succumbing in the higher weight classes.
After Caleb Besmehn won by forfeit at 106 pounds, Carter Ruschmeier needed just 42 seconds to win by fall at 113.
Sawyer Varpness won by fall at 1:08 at 120, Zachary Voelz earned a 9-2 decision at 126 and Jakob Rusten won by fall at 5:35 at 132 to stake the Panthers to the four-touchdown lead.
However, the Eagles rallied to claim the lead at 28-27 before Cody Rae’s 29-second win by fall at 182 put GSL/LP back in front at 33-28.
Unfortunately, Kennedy claimed the final three matches to secure the 10-point team win.
The Panthers came roaring back in the consolation semifinals against Richfield, winning by 36 to move to the fifth-place match.
Ruschmeier won by fall at 3:38 at 106, with Jace Cacka winning by forfeit at 113.
Voelz won by fall at 5:35 at 126 to put the visitors up 18-12 before the Spartans rallied to tie at 18-18.
Keegan Lemke halted the Richfield uprising with a win by fall at 4:38 at 145 to give GSL/LP a 24-18 edge.
Jaxin Anderson (152), Riley Butcher (160), Theo Luciano (170) and Rae (182) all won by forfeit as the Panthers lead shot up to 48-18. Aaron Castillo also won by forfeit at 220 to help send GSL/LP to the consolation final.
Another quick win by fall (:38) by Ruschmeier at 106 got the Panthers’ matchup against C-E-C off to a good start.
Varpness won by fall in 1:35 at 113, with Voelz claiming an 11-0 major decision at 126.
The Lumberjacks rallied to take a brief 22-16 lead, but Lemke’s win by fall in 5:45 at 152, along with Luciano’s win at 160 and Rae’s 50-second win by fall at 182 put GSL/LP up front for good at 34-28.
The final three matches played out as forfeits to clinch the 12-point team win and fifth-place finish for the Panthers.
