One minor question with the Green New Deal

To the editor,
With the approach of the next presidential election less than two years away, it is inevitable that the aspirants for the presidency grasp at everything that will increase their notoriety. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has given members of the Democrat Party a marvelous opportunity for notoriety: The Green New Deal. It is amusing to watch and listen to the folks express support – enthusiastic support – for Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s ideas.
The deal calls for meeting 100 percent of the power demand in the U.S. through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources. The ultimate goal is to stop using all fossil fuels – natural gas and oil – and nuclear energy.
It seeks to upgrade all existing buildings in America for energy efficiency.
It will overhaul transportation systems “to reduce emissions, including expanding electric car manufacturing, building charging stations everywhere and expanding high-speed rail to a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary.”
It will guarantee a job “with family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement for every American.”
It will provide “high quality healthcare for all Americans.”
It will work with farmers “to eliminate pollution and greenhouse emissions as much as technologically feasible” while supporting family farms and promoting “universal access to healthy foods.” Bovine flatulence is a serious problem, a major source of greenhouse emissions. By eating less meat and dairy products the problem can be addressed because less cattle need to be raised.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez contends humanity has only 10 to 12 years to address these concerns. According to her, mankind is causing climate change and climate change must be stopped or else mankind faces devastation. Some of your readers remember when in the 1960s, we faced devastation as the earth was starting to freeze in a global winter. Some of you remember the predictions that population growth was leading to devastation. Some of you remember, the dire warnings about acid rain.
Democrats always seem to be facing a devastating crisis within 10 to 12 years, and only they have the answer to the crisis. Did you notice that no one has proposed a way to pay for the Green New Deal?
Is demolishing the U.S. economy the only solution to the pending climate change devastation? While I ponder that question, I will drive to McDonald’s, order a Big Mac, fries, and a milk, and then I will think about how I will ever get to Hawaii on a high-speed rail.
