Panther girls rebound with first victory
Last week was one spent on both ends of the spectrum for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team. After first being thumped by visiting St. Peter on Tuesday, Dec. 1, the Panthers recovered to claim their initial victory of the season three nights later at Sibley East.
GSL figured it was in for a battle against St. Peter, but the Panthers were not able to contend with the deadeye accuracy of the Saints. Some slack defending by the hosts combined with a scorching shooting touch of the visitors as the Panthers suffered their most lopsided loss since last January as St. Peter claimed a 74-46 triumph.
“St. Peter could shoot. They weren’t missing a thing,” coach Zach Otto-Fisher said. “But they were also ready to go right from the start.”
The Panthers found themselves down by double digits just a few minutes into the game, but managed to cut the deficit to four points one-third of the way into the first half. However, the Saints – employing a hockey-esque substitution strategy of replacing up to all five players at once – put their offense into hyperdrive.
St. Peter led 52-31 at halftime and by as many as 30 with just under four minutes to play before settling for the 28-point win.
