Pantherettes ready to roar into season

They have been practicing since before the beginning of the football playoffs, and now five weeks later, the Glencoe-Silver Lake dance team is ready to compete at last.
“They have been working very hard on learning their new routine,” coach Bertina Schraw said of the Pantherettes. “It is more challenging than routines in the past so we are working diligently every day but we are excited to get our competitive season started.”
GSL has 11 members of the varsity team back from last season, giving Schraw good reason for optimism regarding this season.
Captains Morgan Dahlke, Mackenzie Kantack, Kayla Salmela and Morgan Verdeck will lead the team into its first competition of the year in an invitational tournament in Hutchinson on Saturday morning.
“Morgan Dahlke all around is a very talented dancer,” Schraw said of the team’s lone senior captain. “She has strong kicks, great technique, and brings a lot of skill to the team not to mention her outstanding attitude and leadership skills.”
Madi Anderson, Jaci Lemke and Isabel Petersen have been pulled up to join the varsity this winter, joining a core of Katrina Dummer, Breann Goff, Raegan Merrill, Julia Ramige, Gracie Dreier-Schultz, Kat Ness, Alex Menning, Kantack, Verdeck, Salmela and Dahlke. Becca Olson also joins the team after many years of experience dancing for a studio in Hutchinson.
Schraw said she has been impressed with the growth she has seen in the team, with a number of this year’s squad having attended summer camps and practices.
“It shows in both their confidence and technique,” Schraw said.
Team goals for this year are to focus on kick height, technique and difficulty in the routines this season.
“Our goal is to get 6’s across the board in all three categories,” Schraw noted.
The Pantherettes’ choreography team has been hard at work creating unique routines within the framework of this season’s “jailbreak” theme.
Schraw said that one of the challenges her team faces is to remain confident in their performance even though the competitive placements they earn throughout the season may not live up to their hopes.
“Our scores improve every year and we continue to grow. It will take time before we can compete with most of the other teams in our conference,” she said. “I really hope they can look at their scores as well as their individual and team growth and be proud of all that they have accomplished.”
