Panthers fall to Wildcats

It was a dandy day for a ballgame, but not the result the home side hoped for as the Glencoe-Silver Lake baseball team took on New London-Spicer under sunny skies at Vollmer Field on Tuesday, April 16.
The dapperly-dressed visitors led from the start, scoring three runs in the first two innings en route to a 4-1 victory over the host Panthers.
The loss dropped GSL to 2-3 heading into the Easter break.
NLS scored a pair in the top of the first inning and added another in the away half of the second to take a 3-0 edge.
The Panthers countered by stringing together four consecutive singles in the bottom of the second to score their lone run as Dane Schwirtz knocked home Ty Christensen with two outs to make the score 3-1.
However, GSL left the bases loaded in the frame, missing out on an opportunity to tie the game.
The Wildcats posted one more tally in the top of the fourth to bring the count to its eventual concluding score.
The Panthers came tantalizingly close to pushing across more runs over the final three frames.
A leadoff double by Schwirtz went for naught in the fifth, before GSL came up empty despite pushing runners as far as second and third in each of the final innings.
Both teams left 10 runners each on base in the contest, with NLS outhitting the Panthers 9-8 on the evening. Schwirtz and Christensen each had two hits in the game.
GSL starting pitcher Korey Johnson took the loss after allowing three earned runs – four total – on eight hits and three walks over four innings.
Drew Hedtke came on in the fifth and threw three innings of one-hit, three-strikeout ball.
The Panthers headed to Mound Westonka for their first road game of the season on Tuesday, April 23, after the Chronicle went to press.
GSL is scheduled to host a doubleheader against Rockford beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday evening before welcoming Norwood Young America to town at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
