Panthers overcome Wildcats in overtime
It was quite a start to the season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake football team as the Panthers opened their 2016 campaign with a spirited 27-21 overtime victory over New London-Spicer on Friday, Sept. 2, at Stevens Seminary Stadium.
On a picturesque night for football, the two former Wright County Conference gridiron rivals battled in a back-and-forth contest that was hampered only by the second-half onslaught of marauding mosquitoes.
Confounding critters aside, the Panthers and Wildcats engaged in wild catfight that required five intervals to finally decide.
“It was a very exciting game,” coach Scott Tschimperle said. “It was our first overtime game since facing DeLaSalle at state in 2009, which was also a thriller.”
Junior running back Carsen Streich – who spent a good deal of the evening lined up at wide receiver – got GSL on the board first on a one-yard touchdown run to cap the Panthers’ inaugural drive of the season.
