Plato remains alive in Legion playoffs

The Plato American Legion Post 641 baseball team is still alive in the midst of the Division II, Third District playoffs, having won their first two tournament games on Saturday, July 16, before coming up short against Watertown the next day.

Plato did not give up a single run on Saturday, blanking Sibley East 10-0 in the district opener before shutting out Kenyon 3-0 in the second round to forge a meeting with Watertown.

Post 641 took the early edge after leadoff batter Teddy Petersen reached on an error and later scored on another error to put Plato up 1-0.

However, Watertown led off the bottom of the first with a home run en route to taking a 2-1 lead that was pushed to a 4-1 advantage after five innings.

Post 641 battled back with a pair of runs on a two-out double by Taylor Schauer that scored Peyton Sell and Mitch Pinske in the top of the sixth, before Petersen led off the seventh with a homer to knot the score at 4-all.

But he rally was for naught, as a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Watertown a 7-4 victory and pushed Plato into the elimination bracket, with a matchup against either Belle Plaine or Cannon Falls on tap for 11 a.m. Saturday morning.
