Recent blood drive donations helped 324 people

To the Editor:
Thank you to all the donors who patiently waited to donate at the Glencoe Community Blood Drive last Wednesday, July 26! There was an unusually high number of donors at the 1 p.m. hour, which set the medical team back for the remainder of the day. Your patience waiting to donate is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated! We apologize to those who could not remain to donate and had to leave.
We especially apologize to those walk-ins who appeared after 4 p.m. and were not accepted; the American Red Cross (ARC) collection supervisor indicated the medical team could not work into the schedule any additional walk-ins after that time. Please consider making an appointment for a donation for our next drive to at least get on the schedule. Appointments always have priority over walk-ins.
There were nine walk-ins and 23 no-shows. A total of 101 donors presented for donations for the day. Five potential donors were deferred (unable to donate at this drive), and four were incomplete donations. Of the remaining 92 donors, 76 were whole blood and 16 were double-reds (now called power-reds). One hundred eight total units were received, each unit able to benefit up to three patients; your gift has helped change 324 lives! Even though we fell short of our goal, the ARC was pleased with the results of the drive. Collection Supervisor Lisa said in her followup note: “Thank you for an amazing day!”
The ARC team always appreciates the setting of the City Center Ballroom for the blood drive. It was the first time this ARC Collection Supervisor Lisa was at this venue, and she was appropriately impressed by the preservation of such a beautiful structure in the city and the story behind it. It is a tribute to the community of Glencoe each time someone new comes to realize your dedication.
I want to thank my Scheduling Coordinator Nelda Klaustermeier and the fantastic volunteers who faithfully assist us for each blood drive. The small squad of volunteers who helped at this drive included: Marne, Ken, Dorothy, Madonna, Elrena, Joyce, Barb S., Jean, Kathy, Jackie, Barb B., Joan, Linda, Cindy, Adele, Norene, Charlotte, Karen and Sharon. Your help is so very much valued! I also thank custodians Brad and Sue at the City Center for their hard work in prepping and taking down for the drives.
Special thanks to our local businesses who continue to provide their support of the three blood drives each year: Glencoe City Center (and their custodians), Coborns, Security Bank & Trust, and The McLeod County Chronicle. Thrivent Financial Action Team provided financial support for this drive. Keebler Corporation continues its nationwide support of the American Red Cross with donations of Keebler products for the after-donation snacks.
The last Glencoe Community Blood Drive for 2017 is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 15, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Glencoe City Center Ballroom. Many donors have already pre-scheduled their November appointments. There are still open time slots — so if you want to pre-set your November appointment, please call Nelda Klaustermeier at 320-864-3475.
Again, Nelda and I thank you. But most importantly, the recipient patients and their families thank you — the donors. You have made a difference in the lives of 324 people! Blessings on the remainder of your summer!
Charleen Engelmann,
Coordinator
