Reminder on upcoming GSL School’s operating levy vote

To the editor,
Our school year is off and running and in full swing. It is hard to believe we are in October and at the mid-tri of the first trimester. The school year is once again flying by. As many of you know, the GSL School District has an important vote coming up. The vote will be a part of the Nov. 6, 2018 General Election.
On the ballot, we will be asking for a $460 per pupil unit levy authority. The entire levy authority will generate about $2.3 million dollars annually for the district beginning in 2020. This money is and will be used for the operations of the district, which includes but is not limited to, salaries, transportation, fuel, electricity, etc. etc. Currently, our levy generates about $1.8 million annually. The reason we are asking for an increase is to maintain programs and services as best we can, to maximize state aid, and to keep our fund balance at our 20 percent policy.
Please remember that agriculture land is not taxed on this levy. Only house, garage and one acre. All property classifications are taxed the same. A $200,000 home would see an increase of $85 per year, or $7.08 per month. For more information, you can go to our districts Web site. On the front page, you can click on the icon that says “Referendum Information” to get the dates of upcoming informational meetings. Also, if you go and click on District – Administrative Departments – District Office – Referendum, you will find additional information.
Please know that you can always call the district office for more information at 320-864-2491. We are here to answer your questions. Thank you for your time and continued support of GSL.
Chris Sonju,
GSL School District
