Robotics meet builds technical, cooperative skills

Glencoe-Silver Lake senior Blake Ortloff demonstrates one of the school’s robots at a recent practice session.

The Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL) Robotics Team recently participated in the 2018 Northern Lights Regional in Duluth, where it placed in the bottom half of around 60 schools. Now it’s practicing for its next competition set for Mariucci Arena at the University of Minnesota on March 29, 30 and 31.
For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) have been setting up competitions for 20 years to extend students’ interest in the science and technology fields. In promoting this ideology through competition, FIRST has established a more contemporary and applicable technological culture that fosters and rewards creativity.
Students are in charge of everything. In a team made up of just 20, a design team, build team, programming team, drive team and public relations team collaborate for six weeks to build a robot capable of performing tasks regulated by FIRST. On Jan. 6, the GSL Robotics Team was able to take a look at what was waiting for it at the 2018 competition.
Every year, the beginning of the match begins with a 15-second autonomous window. Teams have to predetermine what their robot is capable of doing autonomously and program it. However, there are three starting spots, and teams aren’t aware of which spot they’re going to get before the match, adding a devastating variability to the mix.
The ability to coordinate amongst teammates is essential during the competition; not only does a team have to be able to successfully communicate amongst members, but it has to be able to communicate and coordinate with other schools in its alliance. An alliance consists of three schools and works together to accomplish tasks for the game. They have to tell each other what strengths and weaknesses their robot has as well as working out a strategy that will be the most effective based off each other’s needs.
