RS Fiber plans to have wireless service to Stewart by March 31
The “backbone” for the RS Fiber fiber-to-the-home project has been built as far as Brownton, the Stewart City Council heard Monday night.
Mark Erickson, the city of Winthrop’s economic development director and a driving force behind the cooperative fiber project, said that the extension of the backbone from Brownton to Stewart, and then on to Buffalo Lake, Hector and Fairfax, will take place this summer.
In the meantime, Erickson said, a “point-to-point” wireless service will be provided. A wireless signal will be broadcast from a tower in Brownton to Stewart, and so on, so that residents will still have high-speed Internet and telephone service, but not video until the underground fiber is completed.
