Ruschmeier competes at state wrestling meet

As a winter storm blew in outdoors, Glencoe-Silver Lake freshman Carter Ruschmeier prepared to take to the mat in the opening round of the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament on Friday, March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
As March roared in like a lion, so did Ruschmeier’s initial appearance at state. The Panther frosh’s task was particularly daunting, as he drew undefeated Section 5AA champion Jake Svihel of Totino-Grace.
Svihel, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Class AA, entered the state meet with a 57-0 record this season. The Eagles senior also came into the match with a chip on his shoulder after having finished as the Class AA runner-up in his previous three state meets.
Undeterred, Ruschmeier challenged Svihel for all three periods, refusing to succumb to either a fall or technical tall.
Svihel won in a 19-10 major decision en route to winning his long-awaited state championship. However, Ruschmeier recorded the most points against Svihel of any of his four state matches. Svihel’s other three competitions resulted in a fall, a 23-8 technical fall, and a 7-3 decision.
As for Ruschmeier, his state appearance remained unfortunately brief.
After his opening-round loss, he faced off against fellow freshman Brandt Bomard of North Branch. Bombard got the upper hand and kept Ruschmeier at bay en route to a 5-1 decision, ending the season for the final Panther grappler of the 2018-19 campaign.
Ruschmeier concluded his freshman season with a 28-17 record.
