School Board adopts 10-year maintenance plan

The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved a 10-year long-term facility maintenance plan presented by Business Manager Michelle Sander at its regular meeting Monday night.
This plan is a new requirement put in place by the state legislature and had to be approved before the August levy data completion.
This new long-term facility plan combines previous revenues for deferred maintenance, health and safety and alternative facilities into one revenue program.
The plan will take effect during fiscal year 2017, which is the 2016-2017 school year, but will be on this year’s levy sheet.
Sander drew up the plan based on the school’s current list of desired maintenance plans and potential repairs for the future. Future expenditures include projects for fire safety, environmental health and more.
The total revenue of the plan for the first year is $338,000 with about $102,000 from state aid and a $235,00 levy.
In other business, the School Board:
• Approved a resolution to schedule a public hearing on closing the Helen Baker elementary school building. The hearing is set for Monday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m.
• Set a meeting to discuss the district’s strategic plan on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
• Heard the district will hold a Truth in Taxation hearing on Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. before the regular school board meeting.
• Heard the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) for 2015.
At the elementary level, math proficiency was at 67.4 percent, higher than the state average of 60.2 percent and the 2014 proficiency of 66.1 percent. Reading proficiency was 62.8 percent, higher than the state average of 59.4 percent and last year’s proficiency of 60.8 percent.
At the junior high and high school level, the proficiency was 42 percent for seventh grade, 44 percent for eighth grade, 86 percent for ninth grade, 56 percent for 10th grade and 48 percent for 11th grade. All were below both the state average and last year’s proficiency.
